Playing with Oil Paint
Tulips!
I’m writing this after the fact, but back in February of 2020, I started taking a local oil painting class just for fun, here in my town. And I was really enjoying it too, right up until they shut everything down due to some non-existent virus called “Covid” and then the world went insane after that. I’m sure you remember it too.
So below is as far as I got in class. This first one we were only allowed to use three colors, and we were just supposed to play with it, so I did. I did a sort of stream-of-subconsciousness and ended up with a very weird image of…. what? What do you think this is?
So then we were given a series of “still lifes” to paint, and we only had an hour and a half for each one. I found this really fun because I usually have a tendency to get into detail too soon, and this forced me to stay fluid and open and to stop thinking too much:

This one below is the last still life I did in class, and I think it turned out wonderfully. It’s full of natural movement and color and I just love how it looks:
I like it so much, I have it in my studio next to my precious felted rabbit! That’s a Renoir reproduction on the wall next to it, not mine 😊 :
Anyway I enjoyed painting with oils so much, I bought a whole set of oil paints (they aren’t cheap, let me tell you) and I plan to do some more of it at home by myself. Here are a couple I recently worked on at home, but as you can see, I immediately got too into the details too much and they lost their movement and spontaneity. I might start using a timer to train myself to work fast for awhile:
